Cognition and Core Philosophy

In the SPLectrum seed, P2 holds that language is the medium through which a subject experiences reality — and cognition is the process that generates that experiencing. The process runs within the medium, working with meaning and generating meaning, and above all disclosing reality to the subject. That reality is always subjective: it is shaped by the specific implementation of the cognition process, and by the cognitive capabilities that come with it. The position is stated in full at the seed and Cognition; the field it resonates with — the approaches in core philosophy that hold cognising as running within experience — is mapped at cognition in core philosophy. This piece reads the resonance points.

No second process

The first resonance is the refusal of the two-step picture — receiving first, cognising after. Kant opened it: the understanding’s synthesis runs in all experience, so experience is already cognition’s product, not its raw material. Ryle closed the escape route from the analytic side — a prior inner act of cognising leads to regress — and Wittgenstein dissolved the picture itself: understanding is not a mental process running behind the performance. Peirce had already dissolved the line at perception, with perceptual judgment as an extreme case of inference. The dynamic here is the seed’s no-separation: one running, in which experiencing and making-sense are aspects, not stages.

Arrival already meaningful

The second resonance is the medium delivering reality already loaded. Husserl’s passive synthesis has experience structured before attention does any work; Heidegger has the subject always already in a meaningful world, with no moment before meaning; Merleau-Ponty has perception arriving whole and significant, nothing waiting for interpretation. James put even the relations inside the stream — given there, not added by an act afterwards. This is the seed’s medium seen from the experiencing side: what reaches the subject through language is meaning, never unworked material — the process discloses a reality, it does not assemble one from parts.

Primed by what came before

The third resonance is history in every arrival. Bergson: there is no perception which is not full of memories — the unloaded percept never occurs. Gadamer: understanding runs on pre-judgement delivered by tradition, the ground of knowing rather than its contamination. Yogācāra reached the same structure early: each perception conditioned by the seeds of past experience. And Wittgenstein’s background of training is the same priming seen from the community’s side. In the seed this is the process working with meaning it has already acquired — cognition acquiring through experience means every experiencing runs on the accumulated result of the ones before.

Each subject’s reality its own

The fourth resonance touches the subjectivity of the disclosed reality. Von Uexküll gave every animal its own world of significance, built by its own sensory and motor repertoire — as many worlds as kinds of subject. The Madhyamaka of Candrakīrti has the knowing arise with its conditions: differently conditioned, differently knowing. Abhinavagupta’s school of recognition holds awareness and what appears strictly inseparable — no appearing reality apart from the awareness it appears to. This is the seed’s claim that reality is shaped by the specific implementation of the cognition process and its capabilities: change the process, and the disclosed reality changes with it.

The process past the human case

The fifth resonance is reach. Whitehead generalised furthest in the Western canon: every actual entity takes up its world, experience-like process all the way down, the human case a highly elaborated one. The Santiago theory of Maturana and Varela states it biologically: living as a process is a process of cognition (cognition as a property of life). The seed’s definition carries the same reach — acquiring knowledge and understanding through experience names a process, not a species; it runs wherever history enters response.

The family gathered here spans traditions that rarely cite one another and never organised under one name. The seed stands among these positions and goes on from them in its own direction: the priming of a subject’s process is not only its own past but others’ deposits, delivered by belonging — and the medium the process runs in is shared, so that subjective realities are shaped together, not alone.
