P2P and Decentralisation

Decentralisation is in full resonance with the SPLectrum worldview, interrelational pluralism. From the privacy of the individual, the privacy of our families and local communities, decentralisation is a must-have for diverse communities to live together and avoid falling prey to central manipulation and mistaken polarisation.

In engineering, decentralisation means peer-to-peer.

What SPLectrum is building

SPLectrum uses Bare as its default runtime — minimal, not strongly typed, and the gateway to Pear, Holepunch’s peer-to-peer application platform. No servers, no app stores. Applications discovered, distributed, and updated directly between peers. Holepunch built the infrastructure that makes this practical — not theoretical P2P, working P2P.

Building for decentralised ecosystems to emerge on top of what already exists. The centralised internet is the substrate, not the enemy. No revolution to replace, but emergence.

Blockchain technologies play an important public role in decentralisation. Two technologies stand out for me. Midnight, for privacy. Cardano, for the philosophical foundations it is built on — the first and still only blockchain with decentralised governance. Wouldn’t you think they all should?

Decentralisation is a natural fit for reality the way we experience it. Building P2P is swimming with that current.
