Conceptual Relativity

In SPLectrum’s philosophy the subject stands as a frame: reality is disclosed relative to the language a subject offers it — the scheme behaving like a reference frame — objectivity is what cross-frame convergence produces, and no view from nowhere is available or required. That dynamic surfaces across a family of twentieth-century positions that arrived at it separately and never organised under one name. What the relativity means for entities — what exists as settled within a vocabulary — is read on the ontology page.

The count with no answer

The family’s shared discovery fits in a toy example. A world contains three individuals — A, B, C. How many objects is that? Count individuals: three. Count every sum of individuals as an object too — as the mereology of Leśniewski’s Polish school does: seven. Both answers are right; neither is wrong; and the question “but how many objects are there really?” has nothing left to be about — the answer was fixed the moment a way of counting was chosen, and no way of counting is chosen by the world. Carnap drew the underlying distinction first: existence questions asked inside a linguistic framework have answers; the same words asked outside every framework — which framework is the true one? — pose no question at all, only the practical choice of a language. Putnam made the three-or-seven count famous and named the finding conceptual relativity: not that truth is relative, but that certain questions have no scheme-independent form.

The dynamic here is the frame. “Three” and “seven” are not rival measurements of one quantity; they are measurements in different frames, like velocities in Galilean relativity — exact within a frame, meaningless as absolute values. What the family found, each member in his own material, is that a conceptual scheme behaves like a reference frame: it does not distort a view that some frameless observer has undistorted — it is what having a view is.

The family

Quine reached the frame through reference: ontological relativity — what a theory’s terms refer to is inscrutable except relative to a background language, and asking for reference absolutely is asking a question that has forgotten its own conditions. Goodman reached it through worldmaking: many versions, built in many symbol systems, none of them the description the others answer to — rightness of fit within a version, no ready-made world beneath them. Kuhn reached it through history: the paradigm as a community’s operating frame, normal science as work within one, revolution as frame-change. And Putnam, arriving last, held the finding together with a working realism: the world constrains what can be said, rational acceptability governs within a scheme, and the descriptions remain plural — “realism with a human face.” What the finding licenses they disputed lifelong.

The same move, arriving in physics

The dynamic surfaces again in a different discipline entirely. Physics made a triumph of expelling the preferred standpoint — Galilean relativity, special, general: again and again, no frame with absolute standing. Then quantum measurement confronted it with the opposite embarrassment: a privileged frame after all, at the observer — one place whose interaction outcome is given absolute standing, in a discipline that had abolished absolute standing everywhere else. Philosophy’s predicament ran the other way: it wanted the frameless standpoint — the view from nowhere, objectivity as no one’s view — and found a frame every time it reached for one. Two different troubles, in each discipline’s own terms; one shared shape underneath: neither gets to stand outside all frames.

Relational quantum mechanics — Rovelli’s programme — answers the physics version by removing the privilege and keeping the frame: every outcome is relative to an interaction; the observer becomes one frame among frames; real relative to a coupling, with no standpoint outside all couplings. “True within a scheme” and “actual relative to an interaction” rhyme — the same shape carried in two vocabularies. And the programme has been pressed philosophically on exactly the family’s ground: van Fraassen’s “Rovelli’s World” works through whether relative facts can be coherently stated without a privileged vantage, concluding that the consistency questions resolve when the situation’s representation is properly understood.

A family that never organised, and a physics that arrived by a door of its own. What none of them gave back was the finding itself: the scheme as frame, the count with no absolute answer, the view from nowhere unclaimed.
