The seed and Complex Adaptive Systems

The seed read through Complex Adaptive Systems vocabulary. For the developed CAS vocabulary, see the CAS subject page.

P0 — Being implies language

P1 — Language is relational

No CAS-specific mapping at this layer — the principles establish being-with-language and the relational character of language.

P2 — Language is the medium through which a subject experiences reality

See the seed and Historicity.

Historicity is what makes experience possible. A subject is a being, so language is always there — but a being-with-language without historicity has no experience through it. Historicity shapes the subject’s inherited language-of-interaction, giving it directionality. Same inherited language sets, different historicities, different subject behaviour.

The loop is single-subject: historicity shapes the language; language is the medium of experience; experience builds further historicity; historicity reshapes the language. Directionality is internal — generated from within, not imposed.

CAS reads this as: the agent (the subject as historicity-shaped output-producer), the landscape (path-shaped terrain favouring some continuations over others), self-organization (the internal teleology), adaptation (the loop).

P3 — Language is where subjects share knowledge about reality

Subjects in a community share a language and a reality. Shared language shapes each subject’s language-of-interaction. Each subject shapes the shared language back through experience; sharing redistributes those experience-amendments through the community.

Language sets the rules of interaction, so directionality is there from the start — experience amends it, sharing distributes the amendments.

CAS reads this as: multi-agent population coupled through shared language, co-evolution between each subject’s language and the shared language, shared reality as the emergent collective behaviour, sharing as the distribution mechanism.

P4 — Languages are interrelational and have equal standing in potential

P5 — Together they form a web of growing complexity

No CAS-specific mapping at this layer — they follow from P2 and P3 once the agent dynamics and multi-agent dynamics are in place.

The recognition

The seed’s dynamic has CAS-shaped recognition at two layers: the subject-as-agent layer (P2) and the population-and-shared-reality layer (P3). For the developed CAS vocabulary, see the CAS subject page.
